Website Analysis Review/Update
Based on our previous research and discussion, we have done some further research.
We have good news on a few fronts which moderate some of the outlying numbers we saw last month, but the core issues remain. This research has also led to the discovery of other potential issues and improvements.
Aggregate numbers for colleges with multiple properties/views
CEHDs drop in referral traffic from Mason core was an outlier among the colleges. When looking at their ‘main’ web property (cehd.gmu.edu), it was reporting a greater than average drop in referrals from Mason core (-65.28%).
After aggregating all their web properties, their overall drop in referrals was closer to the average drop. (-22.28%)
I haven’t run the numbers for COS…
Note: now that the core website is referring users to program pages, the referrals have become more ‘diffuse’. Whereas before most traffic was referred to main unit websites, now traffic is referred more broadly.

Internal site search indexing issues
We identified issues with the internal website search configuration whereby a couple colleges were not being indexed in the internal search appliance, and therefore were not returning search results.
CEHD and COS were both outliers in terms of a larger-than-average drop in referrals, and both had this issue. Surely this must have accounted for some percentage of the larger-than average drop in referrals.
Search indexing criteria have been audited for correctness/completeness.
Bounce Rates
The roll-up profile was reporting a very high bounce rate, and a higher rate than what the core website analytics profile was reporting. The core website profile and the roll-up profile are counting bounce rates differently. Due to the lack of outbound link tracking on the roll-up, the high bounce rate in this profile could definitely be considered to be over-counted. The ‘real’ bounce rate number is certainly lower than what the roll-up profile is reporting. More on that later…
Pageviews
We also compared the roll-up profile pageviews with the core website profile pageviews and found that the numbers are in agreement.
Unit-Level Roll-Up Profiles
Aggregating analytics data from multiple profiles is a challenge. I would recommend creating unit-level roll-up profiles in addition to the university-level roll-up profile.
Individual Website Profile -> Unit-Level Roll-Up Profile -> University-Level Roll-Up Profile
This is not much more complicated to implement than the current set-up in which we have one roll-up profile in addition to the individual website profile.
If using Google Tag Manager, it becomes trivially simple.
Roll-Up vs. Mason Core Website Profile Bounce Rates
Because of the high apparent bounce rate in the roll-up, we looked further into this issue.
We compared the data reported by the roll-up profile to the data reported by the individual Mason core website profile. Although the pageview numbers did match up, there was a large discrepancy in the bounce rate number (54.13% vs. 35.69%).
Because of the difference in ‘context’ between the roll-up profile and the Mason core website profile, you would expect a difference in apparent bounce rate, but this was an unexpectedly large discrepancy. Upon review, it became clear that a big factor in the discrepancy in bounce rates was the way in which the profiles were tracking (or not tracking) events (namely outbound links).
The roll-up is not tracking any website events, making any click to an offsite link (in this context, an offsite link is any link to a page which is not part of the roll-up) count as a bounce (which is the expected default behavior).
The core website analytics account is tracking all outbound link clicks as interaction events, making any click to an offsite link not count as a bounce.
Because of this, it would seem that the core website analytics profile is probably under-counting bounces (at least as traditionally understood), whereas the roll-up profile is probably over-counting bounces (or what we would consider bounces). The ‘real’ number likely is somewhere between the two, and probably closer to the Mason core website profile’s number, as most ‘offsite links’ from the Mason core website are probably link to other Mason-affiliated web properties.
What is the ‘real’ number? It depends: what do we consider a bounce?
Tracking Internal Search Queries
Our analytics profiles are not currently tracking internal site search queries.
Some analytics profiles had been set-up initially to track internal search queries, but the redesign changed the way that query parameters are handled by the website, and, as a result, the internal search tracking needs to be reconfigured. We are looking into options to address this.

What Metrics Should we be Considering?
Point for discussion: what dimensions/metrics should we consider in order to assess the performance of the core website or other Mason websites generally?
We have looked at referrals from Mason core to units. Any others?
Not a metric, but: to assess the differences in referral destinations from Mason core, it might be interesting to take a look at the top landing pages for each unit to see how these have changed pre- and post-redesign.
