Getting Access to Mason Web Analytics

Before Requesting Access: Set Up A Google Account

Have you set up a Google account for your Mason email address?

Access to any Google products – such as Google Analytics – can only be provided to a registered Google account.

For access to George Mason’s Google Analytics properties, you should set-up a Google account associated with your official George Mason email address, as we use this email address to provide access.

If you don’t already have a Google account associated with your Mason email address, please use the button below to create one:

Google Analytics Access

Who Can Request Access to Google Analytics?

Mason faculty and staff will be given access upon request.

If requested by appropriate Mason faculty and staff, outside vendors or contractors who have a need for access to Google Analytics can be given access on request.

Users may be provided access to Google Analytics properties that are relevant to their job duties, which may include properties for individual websites, aggregated unit or department “roll-up” properties, and the university roll-up, which aggregates all* George Mason University websites.

What Level of Access is Provided?

Typically we provide “viewer” permissions to most users, but we are happy to provide “analyst” permissions if the user will be working on shared reports or dashboards.

Higher levels of access to Google Analytics involve risks of misconfiguration, data loss, or loss of access and are therefore more highly-restricted, but we may provide higher levels of access to Mason faculty, staff, or outside contractors/vendors on a case-by-case basis.

However, if you believe that your website’s Google Analytics property configuration needs to be modified, please let us know. We will happily work with you to understand what configurations changes are needed and to ensure that they are implemented without negatively affecting our larger web analytics system. If there is something that would improve your web analytics, other sites may benefit from it too.

How to Request Access to Google Analytics

To submit a web analytics service request, please submit the “Web Services” service request form. On the form, please select “Web Analytics” as the “Web Service Type”.

Google Tag Manager Access

Access to Google Tag Manager is more restricted, as higher levels of access to Google Tag Manager containers involve security risks, as well as risks to website usability and web analytics data integrity.

Who Can Request Access to Google Tag Manager?

Mason faculty and staff may be given access upon request.

If requested by appropriate Mason faculty and staff, outside vendors or contractors – for example marketing or advertising agencies – can be given access to a website’s Google Tag Manager container in order to perform their work, for example by adding tags to support campaign tracking, integration, or other purposes.

What Level of Access is Provided?

For Mason faculty and staff or outside contractors/vendors who need access to customize a specific website’s Google Tag Manager container we provide “edit” but not “publish” access. These users can make and test changes to the website’s Google Tag Manager container configuration, but can not independently publish those changes. Changes to Google Tag Manager containers implemented on George Mason University websites must be reviewed and published by ITS.
